Where the menus are
- Windows: in the session window's frame, starting with View.
- Mac: in the menu bar at the top of the screen while the session window is in front.
- Full screen, on any computer: move the pointer to the very top edge of the screen, and the menu slides down.
Keyboard shortcuts
Every session shortcut uses Ctrl + Alt (on a Mac, Control + Option), so they never clash with keys the remote desktop needs. Any other key goes to the desktop.
| Press | To |
|---|---|
| F11 | Put this window into full screen, or back. Not offered on a Mac, where macOS uses F11 itself. Use the View menu there. |
| Ctrl + Alt + Shift + Q | Leave full screen and release the keyboard and mouse. |
| Ctrl + Alt + F | Put every one of the desktop's screens into full screen, each on its own display. |
| Ctrl + Alt + End | Send Ctrl + Alt + Del to the desktop. |
| Ctrl + Alt + N | Show or hide Network Stats. |
| Ctrl + Alt + H | Show the list of shortcuts. |
| Ctrl + Alt + Up / Down | Turn the session's sound up or down. |
| Ctrl + Alt + M | Mute or unmute the session. |
Ctrl+Alt+Del
Pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del on your own keyboard goes to your own computer, not the desktop. To send it to the desktop, use Send Ctrl+Alt+Del in the menu, or press Ctrl + Alt + End.
Typing a password at the lock screen
Paste does not reach the Windows sign-in screen, the lock screen or a permission prompt. Type Clipboard types the text on your clipboard into the desktop one key at a time instead:
- Copy the text on your own computer.
- Click into the box on the desktop.
- Choose Type Clipboard from the View menu (in a browser tab, Type on the toolbar).
It types one line of up to 256 characters. It needs your administrator to allow the clipboard from your computer to the desktop. The text is never written to a log.
Network Stats
Network Stats shows how the session is doing: frames shown and decoded, bandwidth, round-trip time, and a verdict on the connection. See A session is choppy or blurry for what the numbers mean.
Sound
The View and Audio menus hold the session's volume and mute. By default Billet mutes a session while its window is not in front, because sound from a session you are not looking at is hard to tell apart from sound on your own computer. Turn on Play When Unfocused to keep it playing.
Other options in the menus
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Frame rate | Cap the session at 30 or 60 frames a second. Fewer frames give a sharper picture at the same bandwidth, which suits text and drawings. |
| Reduce Colour Detail | Spend fewer bits on colour. Leave it off for photos, video, or matching brand colours. |
| Full Resolution | Keep the desktop at full resolution rather than letting Billet lower it on a slow connection. |
| Slow When Unfocused | Drop to one frame a second while the window is not in front. Leave it off if you watch dashboards in a background window. |
| Swap Ctrl and Windows Key (Windows) / Swap Command and Control (Mac) | Change which of your keys the desktop sees as Ctrl. |
| Frame Rate in Title Bar | Show the frame rate in the window's title. |
Some of these take effect from your next connection. Your defaults for new sessions are in the app's settings.
